The Sargasso Sea
The Sargasso Sea is a region of the Atlantic Ocean formed from ocean gyres (a large region of circulating ocean currents). The first known accounts of the sea dates to Christopher Columbus in 1492, but it may have also been know to early maritime sailors from a late fourth century poem by Avienus, who describes the region as “being covered in seaweed and windless.”
The ecology of the region boasts many species such as turtles, shrimps, crabs, eels, and many more types of fish and crustaceans unique to the Sargasso Sea.
Despite being surrounding by four other seas with four different currents, all of which deposit their waste and plants into the Sargasso Sea, it is noted for its striking clarity and deep blue colour. It has underwater visibility of up to 20o feet.
